I was reading a blog post the other day about Britney Spears’ Twitter account and thought to myself, “Oh, golly, another celebrity Twitter account!”
So many are filled with trite, silly tweets logged by their flunkies/managers/what-have-you’s, that it’s silly.
Being real on Twitter means being yourself
You’d think… here’s a person with such enormous celebrity and so many fans who listen to them, and they wind up being just another crappy PR Twitter account, blowing their changes to attempt to make a real connection with their fans, increase their credibility, etc.
I found this be true of “therealbritney”, (her Twitter handle, apparently).
Like “therealbritney”, there are lots of other “famous people” on Twitter. And wouldn’t we all like to be one of them? But to get there, you need to be using Twitter effectively, if you are Tweeting as a representative of your business.
And to be effective, you need to be REAL on Twitter. Be yourself, be authentic and genuine. Everyone has a bad day now and then…and I mean everyone. So if you’re not on 10 one day it doesn’t mean you can’t grumble about how your day started with spilling coffee all over yourself, then led up to being late for lunch with a client, who later fired you, and then ended with falling asleep on the couch during your fave reality TV show. It’s OK.

If you are honest and open and caring, the rest won’t matter. Don’t be like so many other crap Twitter-ers, trying to stuff the latest marketing and PR crap down all your followers’ throats. It’s really about making connections, having quick conversations, just committing to a few minutes here and there and then being done with it. Respect those who follow you, and you’ll be a good Twitter-er to follow! Do you want to be on this list? Surely not.
Sure, Twitter has an enormous payoff, one that few other social media tools might lack. But if you’re not using them right…you’ll turn people off faster than you can say “I’m a jerk. Un-follow me!”
